About Us

Theatre criticism as a service to the audience. Not a marketing arm for the industry.

Who We Are

Stripped.
Honest.
Focused.

At The Beltway Blackbox, we believe that theatre criticism is a service to the audience, not a marketing arm for the industry.

Our reviews are grounded in the "Blackbox" philosophy: stripped-back, honest, and focused on the fundamental truth of the work. We prioritize the craft of the performer, the vision of the director, and the integrity of the script over high-budget spectacle.

While The Beltway Blackbox accepts "press comps" (complimentary tickets), these tickets are accepted with a strict understanding of editorial independence. A free ticket is not a contract for a positive review.

We cannot cover every production in the DMV. Our selection process is based on relevance, innovation, and community impact — with a particular focus on smaller companies in the NoVA suburbs often overlooked by legacy outlets.

From the Kennedy Center to community stages in Fairfax, Silver Spring, Arlington, Bethesda, and beyond. If it's theatre in the DMV, it's in our range.

BLACKBOX

The Rules We Play By.

Rule I.
No Quid Pro Quo
A free ticket does not guarantee a positive review. We accept press comps with a strict, non-negotiable understanding of editorial independence. We owe the theatre nothing but our honest attention.
Rule II.
Equal Scrutiny
Same rigorous standards for a community production in a Fairfax basement or a national touring production at the Kennedy Center. Budget does not determine scrutiny.
Rule III.
We Pay Our Own Way
All travel, parking, and dining expenses are covered by the critic. We arrive on our own dime and leave with our own opinion. No venue buys our silence.
Rule IV.
Full Disclosure
Our critics do not review productions where they have a personal or financial stake. Pre-existing relationships are disclosed at the top of the review — or the assignment moves to another writer.
Rule V.
Focus
Cultural relevance, artistic innovation, and community impact — especially from overlooked "hidden gem" companies in the NoVA suburbs that legacy outlets ignore.
Rule VI.
No Fluff. No Polite.
If a show fails to meet the mark, we will say so — and explain exactly why. When a production achieves greatness, we champion it with the same intensity. Our goal: tell you if the show is worth your time and money.
How We Decide What to Cover
Selection Criteria
01
Relevance
How does this show speak to the current cultural climate of Northern Virginia and DC? We're interested in productions in conversation with the world outside the theatre.
02
Innovation
Is the production pushing the boundaries? We look for work that experiments with form, challenges convention, or finds new ways to tell old stories. Safe is fine. Dangerous is better.
03
Community Impact
We seek out smaller "hidden gem" companies in the NoVA suburbs overlooked by legacy outlets. If you're doing important work and no one's writing about it, we want to know.
